WorldsPlayer is the successor to Worlds Chat released in 1998. It brought many features to the table that made it stand out against it's predecessor, including: VIP, 3D avatars, voice chat, and building support. It partnered with many brands and celebrities during its day, including David Bowie, Aerosmith, Hanson, IBM, AOL, RoadRunner, and much much more.
WorldsPlayer was developed after Worlds Inc. was bought out in 1997. It replaced the Worlds Chat Gold servers and became free to register. VIP could be purchased to gain access to 3D articulated avatars and rooms. There were servers available to both North American members and UK members, each housing their own community.
During the Dot-Com boom, Worlds had to lay off its employees, however it is said that even though they weren't being paid, they chose to remain working on Worlds afterwards until finding more work. Worlds.com is still up and online with maintenance still being done on the servers. Users still log in and interact with others on the daily, continuing a virtual worlds generation.
Much of modern Worlds is in dis-repair due to lack of maintenance or old age on the servers. Things such as Voice chat, the VIP payment system, and portions of the Worlds site are non-functional or broken.
